The gospel is very simple. We are all sinners.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Men inherited this uncleanness due to the fall of the first man. He corrupted himself and all have inherited that corruption which leads to death. In condemning Adam, God condemned all that came out of him, the entire human race.
Romans 5:16-19 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
By the disobedience of one, Adam, we were all made sinners. That is only half the verse. By one we were condemn, by one we can also be made righteous. That righteousness is a free gift of God’s grace secured for us by God’s Son, Jesus Christ. The law condemned us and sentenced all to death. Christ Jesus completed the sentence for all men. The sentence of death was carried out by him for all, our crimes, sins, paid for.
God’s law and his holiness are satisfied, the sentence for all was carried out, the penalty paid. By doing this Christ redeemed us from the law, that is he bought our debt.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
It is the same as financing a home from a bank; the bank does not keep your debt but sells it. The new owner can do what he likes with it, make you pay, forgive part, or forgive all.
God purchased the world’s sin debt from the law. The law being satisfied, he can now do what he wants with that debt; he can forgive it or make you pay. He has established criteria so that anyone can be forgiven: by faith in his Son Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Christ Jesus died to open the door of salvation to all, but each individual must enter in on his own.
