Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Romans 11:5-6

This shows that grace and works are mutually exclusive of each other. Salvation between the fall and the millennium was not, is not, and shall never be by works.

Galatians 5:4 KJV Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Romans 4:4-5 KJV Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

The subject of Romans 11 is Israel under the law so we know that the remnant that were saved were saved by grace/faith not works.

Romans 9:31-33 KJV But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faithbut as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; 33As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Again, speaking of Israel mistakenly believing that they would be saved by keeping the law, we are told they were not, that they missed the point. They should not have tried to keep the law to establish their own self-righteousness, but they should simply have done so because God said so, out of “faith toward God” and realized that the law only pointed out that they were filthy sinners and that God was extending them mercy and grace in providing a way to cover their sins.
